Long time ago when Seattle was still being developed, Union Bay & Portage Bay’s canal between one another was ineffective.  I believe this atlas of Seattle is from the 1920s.  When you compare the canal from then to now, the whole area has been re-designed, as the streets you see just north of the canal are no longer present, a bridge crosses over and the University of Washington is now there.
